Review: Voyage of The Damned

by rithompson @ 25/12/07 - 21:30:09

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE TAPED THE EPISODE, AND ARE YET TO VIEW THE TAPE
(Don't say I didn't warn you!)

Well, that was an amazing Christmas special. Not only did it have action and mystery, but also funny lines.

Example, the belief that Santa might be God, and Mary his wife! And confusing the bird turkey with the country! Juvenile humour I know, but humans hold the belief that aliens are green, one-eyed and have tentacles. So it shouldn't really be a surprise that they confuse our Earth traditions. (And a nod to Galaxy Quest in there!).

Not to mention The Doctor's discovery that the Titanic is a space ship, and his quizzing of the angel information points - The Hosts. Did they know why that name ("Earth's most famous ship") had been chosen? Possibly. After all, Max Capricorn's plan was to smash into the Earth, taking revenge on the board of his company and getting a nice retirement thrown in. They seemed to be under his control all the time, so it's possible as the captain knew of the plan. Taking the murky world of business into space, and onto another planet.

That was the second episode in as many series that had evil angels. Are the Doctor Who production team trying to tell us something?! ;)

Yes, There Are Mind's That Are More Random Than Mine In Existence!

by rithompson @ 13/12/07 - 14:36:47

One of them (the only one I can think of), is Philip K Dick. And I've been reading three of his crazy books recently.

As well as involving the typical Sci-Fi themes of dystopian futures, and cool technologies, Dick creates characters who are Schizophrenic, but not necessarily bad people. He also highlights racism (the way people speak of Stuart in "Dr Bloodmoney"), and how indigenous people are treated (the Bleekmen in "Martian Time Slip").

I'd recommend his books. But, be warned, you may find them slightly on the random side.

"Literary" God has Altzeimers

by ajnspencer @ 12/12/07 - 23:17:47

I had to put the literary part in quote marks... if you understand, you do.

Turns out Terry Pratchett has revealed he's got an early form of Altzeimers.

Gawd that sucks, but as usual the man himself is keeping things high spirited...

He told fans the statement should be interpreted as "I am not dead".

"I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else," he said.

"For me, this may be further off than you think. It's too soon to tell."

Here's to a lot more books... A truly great british author.

Tinman

Wow. The most amazing trailer for a new scifi show I have ever seen on the sci fi channel website can be seen here. It takes a while to download but is really cool.

I had never heard of it before. And there are quite a few famous names in it - Zooey Daschaeoleu...or something from Hitchhkers Guide, Alan Cummings and Richard Dreyfuss (I'm guessing he's gonna play the wizard). I think it's a mini series and not an actual series, but could be good.

More info here:

The once-beautiful "Outer Zone" (O.Z.) has been zapped into a frigid and decaying wasteland. One of O.Z.'s inhabitants, known only as Lavender Eyes, has been imprisoned. Her stunningly evil captor in black leather is the sorceress Azkadellia. The Woman is just part of the sorceress's nefarious plot—to suck the souls out of her minions and harness the energy to jump the gap between her world and the "other side"—a place called Earth. But Azkadellia's prescient wolverine servant, Lylo, warns his mistress of a vile presence that embodies goodness, an alarming glimmer of light and hope that could be her undoing. She is DG, a rebellious young waitress from Omaha, imbued with wanderlust and visited upon in her dreams by none other than Lavender Eyes and the fellow slaves whose pleas of "save us" urge DG to follow her destiny.

DG does just that, right over a cliff into a swirling storm, face first in a debris-strewn land of double suns. She eventually encounters Cain, a former policeman from the city in the center of OZ whose past left him hardened. Enlisting the help of Glitch, a man missing half his brain, and Raw, a quiet yet powerful creature looking for courage, DG and Cain embark on a journey of deliverance along a crumbling old road. Where it leads is into the decadence of the Twister Cabaret, the flamboyant shocks of the Realm of the Unwanted, the fetid horrors of the Black Swamp, and deep into the darkening heart of O.Z. and the mind of the Mystic Man who knows all. As Cain learns to feel again, DG will discover her role in the fate of a city, her startling connection to Lavender Eyes and to Azkadellia herself.
