Doctor Who will have three glamorous assistants in the next series - after Billie Piper agreed to a surprise comeback.

BBC chiefs are delighted that Billie, 25, is to star in at least three episodes to round off the next run, which starts in March.

The Time Lord, played by David Tennant, starts with Donna (Catherine Tate) as his helper, is then joined by Martha (Freema Agyeman) and then reunites with Billie's character Rose for the finale. A source said: "With Donna, Martha and Rose competing to assist him, Dr Who is going to be spoilt for choice."

Since quitting, Billie has often admitted she misses the show which turned her into a major TV star. The actress told The Mirror: "Doctor Who is a big part of my life. I've missed it since I left and I love David Tennant."

She was persuaded to return by her family. Billie added: "My mum is the biggest Doctor Who fan ever. I feel bad about not being in this year's Christmas special with Kylie Minogue."

As Rose, Billie proved a huge hit, winning awards two years running.

Next year's 13-part series will end with an explosive plot, before taking a break for just a few specials in 2009. The series returns in 2010.

I thought it was marvelous. i didn't realise how alike those two were, and how irritating the Tenth Doctor can be sometimes, including, as the Fifth Doctor (roughly) says '...jibbering about every little thing he sees in front of his face!' LOL.

*UPDATE*

Old news, maybe, but Chris Pine is going to play the lead James T Kirk in the new movie. Looked him up and I've never seen anything he's been in, so have to wait and see! And also, John Cho has been cast as Sulu, also a small TV bit parter. Here they are below. Capt Pike is also going to feature in the movie, the original captain of the Enterprise of the first ever episode, the pilot of the show, before getting stranded on some planet or other. That role is going to Bruce Greenwood, the only thing I can remember him in is the bad guy in I,Robot.

Eric Bana has signed on to play "Star Trek" villain Nero in Paramount Pictures' bigscreen adaptation of the sci-fi series.

Plot details and even character descriptions of the J.J. Abrams-helmed project are being kept under wraps.

Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy have already boarded the USS Enterprise. Casting is under way in New York and London, and Abrams had been expected to pursue bigger-name actors for the roles of the villain and the Federation captain, the latter of which remains unfilled.

Well, as some you may have heard, our very own Simon Pegg is to play Scotty in the new Star Trek movie. Not quite sure how that will work to be honest. ... Mike Myers may have been a good laugh to play the part - what do you think?

Well, yes, next year the new Star Trek movie will come out. As almost everyone in the old and 'new' series is just - well - getting too old, they are going back to the classic series and have got new actors to play the original Star Trek crew in their younger days. Want to see the cast so far?

It's being produced by Lost's J J Abrams, and is reportedly set around the adventures of Spok & Kirk in their Academy Days.
