  • Review: Human Nature (If You Have Seen It Yet, Then Don't Read)

(Spoilers may be contained in this post)

    First of a two-parter.

Arrrrgh! That was scary! Fortunately, I had a group of friends to watch it with. All of us were very excited at the end.

Anyway, the plot. The Doctor and Martha are being chased by some creatures, and The Doctor instructs Martha on how to escape these things. Then The Doctor wakes up as John Smith, a public school teacher in 1913; having dreamt about this adventure. Martha is a servant at the school. It seems that The Doctor is really human.

However, as it becomes clear, he is still a Timelord and his DNA has been altered so he becomes human, and to hide. His lifestory is hidden in a fob watch, which is stolen by an extremely intelligent pupil. Also the disguise isn't enough to keep the creatures away; "The Family", as they call themselves, have arrived and are busy possessing people and scarecrows. Worringly, The Doctor has apparently forgotten who he ever was, and Martha is becoming increasingly anxious.

This is a pretty good episode, possibly because of its ability to scare me (The Doctor forgetting he's a Timelord, and scarecrows attacking people). I could over analyse it, and try find some deeper meaning, but I can't think of any underlying message so I wait until next week.

  • 42 (This Is A Review, So If You Taped Doctor Who; Look Away Now!)

Review starts further down the page.

    Doctor Who 42

My word, that was kind of scary! Well, the people being possessed by sun particles, and going on a killing/burning spree. Ooh, how chavvy does that sound?!

Anyway, Doctor and Martha answer a distress beacon and end up on a ship whose engines have died. The ship is plummeting towards the sun, and will crash land in 42 minutes. Meanwhile, we have a crew member infected with the sun particles who is burning the crew members one by one. Eeeeeeek! (Yes, that is exactly how I felt!)

Trying to figure out the message behind this is difficult; what was the ship doing so close to the sun? Were they mining the sun's particles for fuel? Maybe, because the sun was a living thing, we should respect it. Perhaps there's a message in there for how we treat our own planet.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into the story.

Anyway, great episode. Possibly made the two week enforced (due to a certain Cheese Fest, last weekend) break worth it.

  • Please, no...

Some people may disagree, but I really, really, really hope that this is just an ugly rumour.......

  • Don't Panic!

That title isn't a reference to "Don't panic Mr Mannering!". No. It's a reference to the towel that Ford gives Arthur in the Vogon ship. As in "That Ford Prefect is a real hoopy frood who knows where his towel is" or something like that lol. Meaning he's prepared, and not to be messed with.

I've heard that you can buy towels with "Don't Panic" written on them. I want one so my alter-ego Electrochick can take one to hospital.

Anyone know where I can get one - preferably on the web?

  • So, which will be the biggest dissapointment...

Terminator 4 which in production and will feature John Conner 30 years in the future... Or two 'made for tv' movies from Star Wars which will feature "other characters from the same milieu..." according to Mr Lucas?

    Answer... NOW! ;)

The best trailer for Doctor Who yet! Just to get you all in the mood...

  • Scotty gets lost!!

Almost 2 weeks after being blasted into space, the ashes of James Doohan who played Scotty in the original Star Trek have been lost somewhere in the mountains

The ashes were launched along with others, including L Gordon Cooper, one of the first men in space, reaching a height of 72.7 miles before coming down in mountainous area. the search has been hampered by bad weather!!

See the story Here on the BBC.

Sounds almost like a Star Trek episode doesn't it:??: :)

  • Thanks AJ!

Thanks for making me a co-Author on this blog; now what should I post about?!

    I know this has been said already, but;

Why have the BBC cancelled Doctor Who for the Eurovision Cheese Fest?!

[Sorry short first post, but brain a little tired from study!]

  • Whoops...

So, out for a week or two and Spiderman 3 has nineteen mistakes and counting... fairly major ones too!

    Check em out HERE.

I don't like nitpicking, the real nerdy mistake spotting but cmon, shouldn't somebody have spotted a load of these?!

  • Hellboy 2

Luke Goss is rejoining director Guillermo del Toro for Universal Pictures' Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie reunites the first movie's principals—Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and both David Hyde Pierce and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien—for a supernatural action-adventure that sees the world of myth rebelling against humanity, the trade paper reported.

Goss will play Prince Nuada, a ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below, defying his bloodline to awaken an unstoppable army of creatures. Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola wrote the script. Filming is scheduled to begin in June in Budapest for an Aug. 1, 2008, release.

Goss previously worked with del Toro on Blade II, in which he played the villainous vampire Nomak.

  • The key's in the bacon...

    Hello,

I know I've already done a couple of posts, but just like to thank AJ for making me a co-author of the blog.

So - it's Saturday night, and here's a quiz of sorts.

10 points for guessing the title of this sci-fi classic, and 100 points for getting the names of the characters right (200 if you don't look it up on google - see that's the trouble with quizes these days!).

    300px-PIS

    Thanks all! The answers were:

    Captain Link Hogthrob
    Dr Julius Strangepork
    Miss Piggy

All travelling on the USS Swinetrek.

  • Warning: This may offend people who think George Bush is cool

    Yes - there is a sci-fi connection.

  • Programmes with Bowie titles

    Hi All,

Just finished watching Life On Mars this week, a truly excellent series and very well cast. A bit like the Sweeney on drugs. They were right to finish it after two series, there are some programmes that just go on too long and lose their original premise, or change it.  Personally, I think he really was in 1973 and just a bit mentally unstable.

    Best line, though:

Sam Tyler: I can just about handle you, driving like a pissed up crackhead and treating women like beanbags. But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green!

    03_1024x768

But it doesn't end there - they're making another one set in 1981. You get a hint of it in the last episode when Sam sends his tape recording down to someone who's 'invetsigating people who have undergone 'trauma'.'

Ashes to Ashes will feature DCI Gene Hunt (played by Phillip Glenister) as its main character. He will be joined by a female detective from the 21st century, DCI Alex Drake (currently uncast), who is stranded in 1981 after an accident. Also reappearing are Chris Skelton (played by Marshall Lancaster) who is stated to be a "technical wizard" and Ray Carling (played by Dean Andrews) who have followed and remained loyal to Gene and they have all transferred to the Metropolitan Police in London. As with the parent series, the show's name comes from a David Bowie song of the era in which it is set. The Times reported that this spin-off would pick up the lives of Gene Hunt and other characters from the series in 1981. BBC Wales Head of Drama Julie Gardner confirmed that the spin-off was to be produced during an interview for BBC Radio Wales in March 2007.

Since Alex Drake is said to have spent months (in 2008) poring over detailed reports left behind by Sam Tyler - John Simm's character from Life on Mars - Ashes to Ashes seems to take the position that Sam's 2006 life was real, and that 1973 was his coma dream. I think they may have a few plot twists coming, though...

Cue lots of jokes about rubiks cubes.

    Can't wait!

  • Emergency Temporal Shift

.. and not of the Kahn (Dalek) variety. But of the 'BBC have decided to postpone Doctor Who on the day of the 12th because of the Eurovision song contest' variety.
The BBC appear to have been screwing around with this seasons Doctor Who's time slots. I dont think any two have been on at the same time yet.

  • Ooooh, freaky timing...

Bought X-Men III today and watched it for the first time, log on and what do I find? Another X-Men spin-off movie in the works.

A short while back it was revealed there's going to be a Wolverine spin-off, and now there's going to be a Magneto one too.

As far as I can see both will concentrate on their earlier lives, especially the Magneto one which will look all the way back to his childhood and early years hunting down Nazi War criminals.

Personally I'm sadly excited, I'm a real lover of superhero movies and X-Men ones in particular... Well, when they're done right anyway!

Hopefully these will carry on the Marvel tradition of keeping to the storyline and the history of the character (well, except for The Hulk and the Spiderman 2 sections where he spends all his time without his mask on...)
