Doctor Who: School Reunion

by cj592 @ 27/04/06 - 21:43:19

Doctor Who
School Reunion: A London school is haunted by strange, bat-like creatures at night. But when the Doctor investigates, he finds an old friend, Sarah Jane Smith, already working undercover.

Its the Day K-9 comes back
And if you watch the tardisode, you will see Mickey being denied access by Torchwood. These references are blatant now- not quite as mystifying as the Bad Wolf Scenario... but what is it all leading to... The Silver Devastation perhaps?

Sci-fi quizzy answers

by ajnspencer @ 23/04/06 - 19:13:59

OK, the last two answers on the sci-fi quiz have gone on for so long it's fallen right off the board so I'm posting them here for those that might want to know. :))

This is the full quote that is in Dune:

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

And the answer to 10 which was got (eventually ;)) by Brad was that the white rabbit was one of the forms taken by the Polymorph in Red Dwarf!

Co-authors... I'm dissapointed in you ;):))

Tooth and Claw: a quick review (spoilers)

by cj592 @ 23/04/06 - 08:21:43

Tooth and Claw
Date: 1879
Location: Scotland
Plot: The Doctor and Rose arrive in Scotland just as Queen Victoria is visiting the Torchwood Estate. However, moments before agroup of Monks have besieged the place, replacing the staff and keeping the original staff hostage. And not only that but they have brought a werewolf with them. Their plan is to infect the Royal family with Lycanthropy and hreald in the New Empire of the Wolf. But the Torchwood Estate holds other secrets. Why are the walls infused with Mistletoe and what's the purpose of the old telescope?
My Thoughts. This was definitely a darker epside than the first. The CGI was good as was the characteriation. Once again the feeling of fear were implied, such as when the wolf was prowling around outside the room. Once again you had to forgive some of the plot errors(Like if the wolf couldnt break through into the room so had to come in from the roof, how did it break out of the room so quickly)-they have a lot to pack in in 45 mins. I did get the feeling that some of the humour was more 'forced' into the script. I amnot sure how well the 'not amused' stuff worked too well.
Further plot indicators: We now know where the idea of the Torchwood institute originated from.
Score: 7/10

Doctor Who:Episode 2: Tooth and Claw

by cj592 @ 20/04/06 - 20:58:18

Episode 2: Tooth and Claw

The Doctor and Rose travel back to the year 1879. But an encounter in the Scottish Highlands with Queen Victoria and a band of warrior monks reveals a deadly trap, dating back centuries. Can the local legends of a werewolf really be true?

Judging by the BBC site, it loks quite scary! Ooh How exciting.
Discuss your thoughts here. I will write a review after the episode

But here is the BBC's Fear Forcast

How scary is Doctor Who? Our brave Fear Forecasters present a minute-by-minute guide to Tooth and Claw.
Amy (5)
Harry (7)
Samuel (9)
Adam (13)
(1) From the very beginning, this episode looks different. "It looks like 'Lord of the Rings'," says Adam. Harry is impressed.

(2) "Why won't they show us?" grumbles a frustrated Amy.

(4) Adam covers his face.

(9) As things beging to get scary, Harry adopts the foetal position.

(10) Big smiles...

(18) Adam and Samuel's eyes goggle.

(21) A big cheer from Samuel.

(24) Harry and Adam jump at a big scare!

(26) Harry's startled. Amy's playing it cool.

(29) Adam and Samuel stare open-mouthed.

(34) Everyone's in danger! And Harry has somehow managed to get his right knee in his mouth.

(40) Suddenly very serious.

(41) Gasps!

At last!

by ajnspencer @ 18/04/06 - 22:49:43

A professor at the University of Bristol has revealed that there is no reason why "synthehol" - the synthetic alcohol introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation - could not be made now.

Professor David Nutt will be publishing his idea for a beverage that will provide the enjoyable aspects of alcohol consumption without the deleterious side-effects, such as hangovers and liver disease, in the next issue of the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

"The trick pharmacologists need to pull off is to make a mixture of molecules that deliver alcohol's pleasurable effects, notably relaxation and sociability, without the aggression, nausea, loss of co-ordination and amnesia that can cause drinkers and those around them so much grief," said Nutt. "Long-term problems such as cirrhosis of the liver could also be eliminated."

Rimmer V Lister

by classicrockchick @ 16/04/06 - 22:09:45

Last night I was watching a documentary on DVD about the making of series 8 of Red Dwarf.

I was suprised when Doug Naylor talked about how hard it became to film the bunk scenes after the actors who played Rimmer and Lister fell out.

No further info was given, and so now I'm burning with curiosity as to why they fell out!

Does anyone know?

Doctor Who: New Earth A review (Spoilers)

by cj592 @ 15/04/06 - 20:44:45

Set: Planet New Earth
Date: 5 billion and 23
Plot: On visiting New New York, New Earth, The Doctor gets a message via his psychic paper to go to ward 26 in the hospital to visit an old acquaintance; The Face of Boe. Also hiding in the hospital is Cassandra, the last pure human, whos brain had survived the incident on Platform 1. Cassandra steals Rose' body so that she can find the secret hidden in the hospital. The secret being that the Cat Nurses have been growing human clones to use as test subjects, infecting them with plagues and diseases so they can find cures. Cassandra want to use the information for blackmail purposes, but The Doctor has other ideas.
My Thoughts: Great first episode with some great scripting and acting. The scenes of the body swapping as Cassandra enters Rose and The Doctor are first class. The plot is enjoyable as long as you overlook the obvious holes (For example if only those few bags of fluids could cure all of the plagues, why didnt the cat people use them before). And there was a good hook with The Face of Boe, what is is message for the traveller? is this something we are going to find out in a later epside? One question many people want to know is... will there be an ongoing theme linking the series such as the successful 'Bad Wolf' scenario from the first series?
Best Bits: The body swapping. Cassandras horror when she realises she's a Chav!
Score: 7/10

Any other thoughts?

Terminator 4

by ajnspencer @ 12/04/06 - 14:00:56

Hmm, I wonder if this will be the rarity of a good fourth follow up or will it be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

What worries me most is that Arnie has been asked to do a cameo... Now ignoring my dislike of random cameos for their own sake isn't Arnie just a parody of himself nowardays?

With all the politics stuff etc now he's just... well, a bit of a joke.

Or am I being harsh? I will admit, T2 - Judgement Day? I do love that movie.

Sci-Fi quiz

by ajnspencer @ 10/04/06 - 19:49:36

EDIT: Ever wonder if you've made something a little too tricky...? The next one will be easier, I promise!

OK, these are... different questions but c'mon! We all know you guy will have them solved by the end of the night!

The original Inquizitor, Sir CJ, has agreed to Inquizitor points for all right answers! (Cheers mate!)

1) Gerry Anderson was involved in making numerous tv shows, 1 or more series had numbers in the title. Break each number down to single digits and add them all together, what's the total?

2) One for the trekkers, how many Star Trek craft have been named Enterprise?

3) How does The Mad Hatter connect classic sci-fi movies The Black Hole and Planet of the Apes?

4) One side's robots were spheres, the other side's robots were cubes... what's the show?

5) "I must not fear..." is the beginning of a famous phrase from Dune. What's the last line?

6) Which band of sci-fi baddies did this quiz writer have nightmares about as a child, chasing him around his school and the surrounding area?

7) In what movie did Jonesy travel on the Sulaco?

8) Majestic were the bad guys in which short running cult tv series?

9&10) Probably most famous for appearing in Alice in Wonderland, a white rabbit has also appeared in a sci-fi movie and a sci-fi TV show. (You must have both answers to get the point)

9) Which character followed the rabbit in what movie?

10) What was the rabbit in what TV show?

1) 42
2) 12
3) Roddy Mcdowell
4) Terrahawks

Tardisodes

by ajnspencer @ 09/04/06 - 15:48:27

OK, is this the worst naming ever? Tardisodes?! What the hell does that mean?

Anyway, it's actually not a bad idea, little prequels to go with each new Dr Who episode available online or on a mobile.

But what doofus in marketing came up with Tardisodes?!

Have to admit, the BBC Dr Who minisite is pretty good.

Messages for aliens

by ajnspencer @ 08/04/06 - 10:33:10

Not sure if it's true...

About 1966 or so, a NASA team doing work for the Apollo moon mission took the astronauts near Tuba City where the terrain of the Navajo Reservation looks very much like the Lunar surface.

Along with all the trucks and large vehicles, there were two large figures dressed in full Lunar spacesuits.

Nearby a Navajo sheep herder and his son were watching the strange creatures walk about, occasionally being tended by personnel. The two Navajo people were noticed and approached by the NASA personnel. Since the man did not know English, his son asked for him what the strange creatures were and the NASA people told them that they are just men that are getting ready to go to the moon. The man became very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts.

The NASA personnel thought this was a great idea so they rustled up a tape recorder. After the man gave them his message, they asked his son to translate. His son would not.

Later, they tried a few more people on the reservation to translate and every person they asked would chuckle and then refuse to translate. Finally, with cash in hand, someone translated the message, "Watch out for these guys, they come to take your land."
